Introduction to the Statistics and Census Service

The application of statistics covers an extensive range, from government policy making to market analysis of private enterprises, and research studies of academic institutions and individuals. In Macao, the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) is responsible for the collection, analysis and dissemination of statistics. You may have always been surrounded by statistics released by DSEC, but how much do you know about them?

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has been playing an indispensable role in the development of Macao. Statistical projects of DSEC cover a wide range of topics, including demography, society, labour force, tourism and gaming, transport and communications, etc. The statistical data come partly from administrative information provided by other government departments and public institutions, and partly from data collected through household and enterprise surveys.
To produce high quality statistics, DSEC relies on a dedicated team of statistical and IT professionals. Every process from project formulation to collection and compilation of data is strictly managed and in adherence to quality control requirements. This is to ensure that statistical methods are adopted in compliance with scientific principles and international standards. Besides using traditional media such as newspapers, television and radio, survey results are released simultaneously on the DSEC website, and subscribers to electronic publications will also receive e-mail notification. To obtain statistical data, users may access the electronic publications and the Statistics Database from the DSEC website; meanwhile, statistical enquiries can be made via the Online Customer Service platform, or by telephone, e-mail, fax, post or in person to the Documentation and Information Centre.
Statistical information can reflect the socio-economic situation and changes of Macao, which is helpful in formulating targeted policies. DSEC will continue to implement the objective of “Statistics are here to serve you” and provide high-quality, reliable, timely and transparent official statistics to the public.
