  2012/2013 Household Budget Survey

The Household Budget Survey (HBS) is conducted once every five years. The objective is to collect up-to-date information on household income and consumption expenditure of Macao, for updating the basket of goods and services in the compilation of the Consumer Price Index. Information collected is also useful in analysing the consumption patterns, living standard and income distribution of households.
A sample of 6,500 living quarters is selected for the 2012/2013 HBS. All selected living quarters receive a notification letter from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) prior to the visit of the enumerator. Household members aged 16 or above are required to complete an Expense Diary for a 14-day period.
To ensure that information collected can fully reflect the consumption patterns of households at different seasons of the year, the HBS is conducted for one whole year from September 2012 to September 2013. Data collection is carried out in 26 bi-weekly (14 days) cycles, each of which consists of 250 living quarters.
Apart from collecting basic information on household members, such as year and month of birth and economic activity status, the HBS also collects information on income and benefits received in the past 12 months, consumption expenditure, possession and acquisition of durable goods, and more. During the 14-day data collection period, enumerators visit the households every two to three days to collect or assist in completing the Dairy.
