Q1. Why do I have to complete the questionnaire of the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC)?

Statistical information is very useful for government policy formulation, business decision making and personal planning. Compilation of high quality and timely statistics relies on the accurate information provided by households and enterprises. Therefore, your support and cooperation are crucially important.

Q2. What authority does DSEC has in collecting data?

In accordance with the Decree Law 62/96/M, DSEC is empowered to conduct statistical surveys, and all selected households and enterprises are obligated to cooperate and provide accurate information as requested.

Q3. Will the statistical results indicate personal details of respondents?

Definitely not. Information collected by DSEC is kept in strict confidence and used solely for statistical purposes. Information will be consolidated for analysis and only aggregate data, which do not reveal identity of individual households, persons or enterprises, will be released.

Q4. Will DSEC pass personal information to the Court or other departments?

No, not under any circumstances. In accordance with the Decree Law, information collected by DSEC must not be the object of ordered or approved examination by any court, organisations or authorities.

Q5. Why is my housing unit always selected?

Every year, DSEC conducts a number of statistical surveys covering various economic, social and demographic aspects. However, due to time and resource constraints, an appropriate number of samples (i.e. sampling) will be selected from the population for enumeration. Data will be consolidated for statistical inference and analysis before dissemination. As Macao is a tiny place with a small population size, the probability of being selected repeatedly is thus relatively high.

Q6. Why are household surveys mostly conducted at night?

This is to accommodate the daily schedule of households. As most household members need to work or study in the daytime, household surveys are usually conducted in the evening or at night to reduce the need for revisiting the households in case of non-contact.

Q7. Why are survey respondents required to provide their name and telephone number?

Respondents are required to provide their name to ensure that every household member is enumerated without duplication or omission. To conduct interview one by one according to the names can avoid confusion, and survey respondent may provide a nickname provided that each household member can be identified. Moreover, telephone number is collected so that follow-up calls instead of another visit will be made to respondents for verification of information.

Q8. Why personal information such as occupation, industry, income, educational attainment, rental, etc. have to be collected?

All these information provides a better understanding of the social and economic conditions of the Macao population, and serves as an important reference for policy making, business investment and academic research.

Q9. Does data verification mean information provided is incorrect?

Definitely not. Information collected will be checked again by DSEC. In case of errors or omissions, DSEC staff will contact the household or enterprise to verify the answers or fill out missing information in order to ensure the quality of data collected.

Q10. If the respondent was not born in Macao, does he/she need to complete the questionnaire?

All individuals residing in the selected housing units, regardless of whether they are local residents, have the obligation to complete the questionnaire of DSEC.

Q11. If I am not the owner of the housing unit, do I need to complete the questionnaire?

All individuals residing in the selected housing units, regardless of whether they are the owner, have the obligation to complete the questionnaire of DSEC.
